From Tunis to the Sahara: 3-Day Tour of Tozeur and Douz

Set off on a 3-day adventure between the oases of Tozeur and the dunes of Douz.
Day 1: Tunis / El Jem / Matmata / Tamezret / Douz

Departure from Tunis to the El Jem Amphitheater for a photo stop in front of this exceptional Roman monument, one of the best preserved in the world. Continue to Matmata, famous for its troglodyte dwellings carved into the rock and its unique Berber heritage. After lunch at a local restaurant, drive to Tamezret, a typical Berber village nestled in the heart of the desert landscapes of southern Tunisia. Arrival in Douz, known as the "Door of the Sahara", famous for its palm groves and oases. Tour of the town center and the Desert Animation Center. Option of camel riding or a sunset ATV excursion (at an additional fee). Settle into a traditional camp, learn about the preparation of sand bread, and enjoy a Bedouin dinner around the campfire in an authentic atmosphere.

Day 2: Douz / Chott El Jerid / Tozeur / Nefta

Breakfast at the camp, then departure to Tozeur, crossing the spectacular Chott El Jerid, a huge salt lake with surreal landscapes. Photo stop to admire the unique reflections and colors of the desert. In Tozeur, board a 4x4 to explore the mountain oases of Tamerza and Chebika, known for their exceptional natural panoramas. Lunch at a local restaurant, then crossing of Chott El Gharsa by 4x4 to Ong Jmal, the famous Star Wars set. Continue to Nefta to discover the famous Corbeille de Nefta, an oasis fed by numerous natural springs. Settling in, dinner, and overnight at Hotel Ras El Ain.

Day 3: Tozeur / Gafsa / Kairouan / Tunis

After breakfast, discover the traditional medina of Tozeur, famous for its decorative brick architecture. Travel to Gafsa, a historic city with a wealth of archaeological remains. Lunch en route, then continue to Kairouan, one of the most important holy cities in the Muslim world. Visit the Great Okba Mosque and the Sidi Sahbi Mausoleum.

Return to Tunis at the end of the day, marking the end of this unforgettable immersion in the heart of the Tunisian Sahara and its historical heritage.
