Quito: Cotopaxi National Park Tour and Horseback Ride

Explore Cotopaxi National Park on a full-day tour from Quito. Hike to the José Rivas Refuge, enjoy a horseback ride through the Andean páramo, and visit the Limpiopungo Lagoon.
Begin your journey by heading south along the famous Avenue of the Volcanoes, one of Ecuador’s most scenic routes. During the drive, your guide will provide insights into Andean geography, volcanic formation, and local culture. The landscape gradually transitions from urban areas to rural highlands, with haciendas, farmland, and expansive mountain views.

Make a technical stop for restrooms, snacks, and hydration. Depending on the day of operation, a visit to traditional Andean markets may be included. On Thursdays, visit the Saquisilí Market, and on Sundays, visit the Pujilí Market. These markets offer an authentic cultural experience, where you can observe local trade, traditional clothing, agricultural products, and daily life in Andean communities.

Enter Cotopaxi National Park, one of Ecuador’s most important protected areas. During the drive inside the park, your guide will explain the páramo ecosystem, volcanic activity, and Andean biodiversity. Wildlife sightings may include wild horses, deer, and high-altitude bird species.

Next, enjoy a guided horseback riding experience led by local chagras (Andean cowboys). The ride follows natural trails across the páramo, offering wide open landscapes and direct views of Cotopaxi Volcano. This activity allows you to explore a broader area of the park with minimal physical effort while adding a strong cultural component.

Then, take a guided walk around Limpiopungo Lagoon, a glacial lagoon located at the base of the volcano. Your guide will explain local flora such as chuquiragua and native fauna including Andean bird species. This is also a key acclimatization point before higher altitude activities and an excellent location for photography.

Visit the Mariscal Sucre Interpretation Center to learn about Cotopaxi’s eruptive history, geology, and the park’s conservation efforts.
