The Château des ducs de Bretagne has been listed as a historic monument since 1840. It is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city of Nantes and in Brittany's historical heritage. Its construction, ordered by the Duke of Brittany, Francis II, dates back to the 15th century, at a time when Brittany was not yet part of the Kingdom of France.

Francis II wanted to provide Nantes, the capital of the Duchy, with a fortress capable of protecting it from potential threats, while also incorporating a comfortable and prestigious palace. The castle thus serves a dual purpose: a powerful defensive structure on the outside and a refined residence, characterized by the Renaissance style, on the inside.

Anne of Brittany, daughter of Francis II, was born there in 1477. Crowned Queen of France twice during her lifetime, she continued the major works undertaken by her father and played a role in enhancing the castle.

After Brittany was annexed to France in 1532, the building became royal property, as can still be seen today in the heraldic decorations combining French and Breton symbols. Until the 17th century, it also served as a prison for high-profile inmates.
