Tbilisi – Kazbegi Tour: From City to Mountains
Leave the city behind and head north toward the mighty Caucasus. This journey from Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) is one of Georgia’s most scenic routes — full of stories, mountain views, and local flavors along the way.
Our first stop is at the Zhinvali Dam, a turquoise reservoir surrounded by green hills — a perfect place for photos and to breathe in the fresh mountain air.
Just above it stands the Ananuri Fortress, a medieval castle overlooking the water. Here, we walk through ancient towers and churches while I share the stories of feudal Georgia and the battles once fought on these lands.
As the road climbs higher, we reach Gudauri — a popular mountain resort with breathtaking panoramas. We stop at the Friendship Monument, standing on the edge of a deep gorge, symbolizing unity and offering one of the most iconic views in the country.
Continuing north, we pass natural mineral springs and travertine formations, where colorful layers of rock and flowing water create a surreal landscape — a hidden gem along the Georgian Military Road.
Finally, we arrive in Kazbegi (Stepantsminda), surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Greater Caucasus. From here, we ascend to the Gergeti Trinity Church, perched high above the valley. The view of Mount Kazbek, often wrapped in clouds, is truly unforgettable — a perfect finale to your mountain adventure.
Throughout the day, you decide the rhythm — stop for coffee or wine, take photos, or simply enjoy the mountain silence.
