Immerse yourself in the art of Japanese calligraphy in a 150-year-old Kyoto townhouse. Learn the basics of calligraphy and create your own hanging scroll featuring a meaningful Zen phrase.
Begin with an introduction to the history of calligraphy and Zen phrases. Practice brush techniques on washi paper, guided by an instructor who will explain the philosophy behind the words.
Once you’ve mastered the strokes, create your final piece on hanging scroll paper. Assemble your scroll to take home, a perfect souvenir or interior decoration.
This experience is suitable for beginners and includes all materials. Choose between English or Japanese instruction.

This experience is suitable for beginners. No calligraphy experience required.
Children under 6 must be accompanied and assisted by an adult.
Ink may stain clothing — please dress appropriately.
Guests who arrive more than 15 minutes late may not be able to join the session.
The activity takes place in a traditional wooden house; please remove your shoes upon entering.
If you wish to bring a photographer or take photos during the session, it is allowed but should not disturb others.

If you are coming by taxi
Please ask the driver to drop you off in front of Park Hyatt Kyoto on Ninenzaka.
From there, it is just a 1-minute walk to our venue.
