Descrição

Walk the historic center through the lens of 500 years of popular struggle, from the Zapotec world before the Spanish conquest to the 2006 APPO uprising that shut down the city for months.
Oaxaca has a living history that most tours skip entirely.

This 3-hour walking experience traces the city's history of resistance — from pre-Hispanic Zapotec civilization through colonial rule, the Reform era, and the 2006 APPO uprising. You'll walk streets where teachers built barricades,

1. Zócalo
Stand in the main square. Learn about Huaxyacac (Aztec garrison), ancient corn domestication, and Zapotec/Mixtec city-states before the Spanish.

2. Cathedral
Walk to the Cathedral. Discuss the armed conquest, Cortés, the Zapotec alliance, and Mixtec resistance. Key idea: "The conquest didn't end with weapons."

3. Cortés House
Visit the exterior of Cortés' house. Explain the Marquisate, encomiendas, indigenous tribute, and how colonial civil power worked.

4. Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad
We gonna talk about the "spiritual conquest," Dominican evangelization strategies, and Baroque art as emotional control.

5. Santo Domingo de Guazmán Temple
Explore the former convent. Understand why Dominicans ruled Oaxaca, how convents were fortresses, and the role of the Inquisition.

6. Juárez House
See where Benito Juárez lived. Explain the Reform Laws: separation of Church and State, civil registry, nationalization of church property.

7. Institute of Sciences
Stop at the former seminary turned secular institute. Discuss the Oaxacan liberal elite and the transition to the Porfiriato.

8. Macedonio Alcalá Theater
Admire the theater's exterior. Learn about Porfirio Díaz, "Order and Progress," and the inequality behind modernization.

9. CNTE Offices
Stand outside the teachers' union offices. Explain the SNTE, charrismo, the CNTE's founding, and Section 22's role in social struggles.

10. Return to Zócalo
Detail the 2006 conflict: teachers' demands, June 14 violent eviction, birth of APPO, barricades, death caravans, and November 25 repression. Final reflection. Observe graffiti, stone doors, vendors, and protests. "Oaxaca is a conversation between memory and resistance."
