Embark on a 4-day trek to Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Hike through the Salkantay Pass, visit the Humantay Lagoon, and explore the hidden Royal Citadel of the Incas.
Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa
Start with a pick-up from Cusco and take a bus to Mollepata. After a 2-hour trip, stop in Mollepata for breakfast (not included), as well as to buy last-minute provisions, stretch your legs, or use the bathrooms, before continuing to Cahllacancha.
Around 9:30 AM, begin the hike to Soraypampa (3,900 meters above sea level). If you maintain a regular pace, it will take approximately 4 hours to reach Soraypampa, the first campsite, where you will have lunch.
In the afternoon, after lunch, visit the Humantay Lagoon. In the evening, enjoy a hot and delicious dinner.
Day 2: Soraypampa - Salkantay Pass - Huayramachay - Chaullay
Around 5:00 AM, have a nutritious breakfast. At around 6:00 AM, start the most difficult day of the entire Salkantay trek. Hike to the highest point of the trek. After 6 kilometers uphill through the magnificent landscape of the Rocky Mountains and enjoying the view of Mount Salkantay, reach the top of the trek.
Appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snow-capped peaks of Salkantay (6264 meters above sea level), which is known as the second highest mountain in the Cusco region.
After 2 hours of descent, around 1:00 PM, have a delicious Peruvian lunch, in the area called Huayracmachay. Then continue your hike to Chaullay, approximately 3 hours of descent, and arrive at your campsite in Chaullay at 2900 meters above sea level where you will sleep in some very spectacular indigenous huts.
Around 18:00, have dinner to regain energy from the hike.
Day 3: Chaullay | Collpapampa - La Playa - Aguas Calientes
At 06:00 AM, begin your hike to the small town of La Playa through the valley of Santa Teresa. After a hearty lunch in La Playa, take the transport that will take you to the hydroelectric power station for 1 hour and a half.
Afterwards, walk 10 kilometers for 3 hours, along the train track, to the city of Aguas Calientes, where you will stay in a hotel for the night.
Day 4: Machu Picchu
Wake up early after a restful night at your hostel to get ahead of the crowds at the top of Machu Picchu and enjoy its serenity in the soft morning light. The entrance checkpoint to Machu Picchu opens from 06:00 to 15:00.
Climb to Machu Picchu (optional bus ride for $12.00) and enter the hidden Royal Citadel of the Incas. Take a 2-hour guided tour. After the tour, take the train to Ollantaytambo. A group minivan will be waiting for you to take you back to Plaza San Francisco in Cusco.
