The Archaeological Museum of the Martins Sarmento Society in Guimarães is one of the oldest and most important archaeological museums in Portugal. It was inaugurated in 1885, initially bringing together archaeological materials from the excavations carried out by Francisco Martins Sarmento at the Citânia de Briteiros and the Castro de Sabroso, as well as from other archaeological sites in Northern Portugal.
The museum stands out above all for its important collection related to the Castro Culture of the Northwest Peninsula, including objects made of stone, bronze, and iron, ceramics, goldsmithing items, sculptures, altars with inscriptions, and other remains that help us understand the communities that inhabited the region in antiquity. Over time, the collections have been enriched through new excavations, donations, and bequests.
Located at the headquarters of the Martins Sarmento Society, the museum also offers a historical experience, as the building itself and the organization of the collections reflect the museological tradition of the late 19th century. In addition to archaeology, the Society preserves important collections of Ethnography, Numismatics, and Modern and Contemporary Art.
