Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island or Quarantine Island, has a rich history. In 1893, the former British prime minister of Zanzibar purchased the island and constructed a prison complex, though it was never used for its intended purpose. Instead, it served as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases.[5] Today, the building is a ruin but functions as a guesthouse for tourists. A significant attraction on Prison Island is the giant tortoise reserve. In 1919, four Aldabra giant tortoises, a gift from the governor of Seychelles, were brought to the island. They thrived in the environment and bred freely, with some of the original settlers still present. The island also features a nursery for baby tortoises, providing an opportunity to see tortoises of various ages.[5] Visitors can admire, pet, and even feed these ancient creatures.[3] The Aldabra tortoise species is currently considered vulnerable and is listed on the IUCN Red List.
