Day 1: Departure – El Jem – Matmata – Douz (Desert Camp)

Your adventure begins early in the morning, with hotel pickup to start a journey through history, culture, and the legendary landscapes of southern Tunisia.

First stop: El Jem, home to one of the world’s best-preserved Roman amphitheaters, a UNESCO World Heritage site rivaling the Colosseum in Rome. Step back in time as you explore this monumental relic of the Roman Empire.

Continue south to the troglodyte village of Matmata, with a visit to the iconic Sidi Driss hotel, famous as a filming location for Star Wars: A New Hope. Meet the locals and discover how families still live in houses carved into the rock, and enjoy a cup of traditional herbal tea with honey and olive oil.

Pause for photos in the picturesque village of Tamazret, perched on a ridge overlooking the desert, and enjoy lunch at a local traditional restaurant.

In the afternoon, arrive at Douz, the gateway to the Sahara, where golden dunes stretch endlessly. Settle into a comfortable desert camp for a true off-the-beaten-path experience. Optional activities include sunset camel rides, quad biking, buggies, or Jeep excursions. Watch traditional bread baking under the desert embers, savor a delicious homemade dinner, and gather around the campfire under a sky full of stars. Sleep in a private tent or under the Milky Way.

Day 2: Douz – Chott El Jerid – Nafta Basket – Ong Jmal – Tamaghza – Kairouan – Return

Wake up early to the serene silence of the desert and heading out. Cross the surreal Chott El Jerid, North Africa’s largest salt lake, famous for its shimmering mirages and endless salt flats.

Next, stop at the scenic Nafta Basket , a natural paradise perfect for photography and a peaceful stroll. Then, take an optional Jeep trip to Ong Jmal to enjoy breathtaking panoramic desert views.

Continue to the serene oasis of Tamaghza, surrounded by mountains and palm groves, before reaching Kairouan, the holy city of Tunisia. Here, admire the exterior of the Great Mosque of Kairouan, witness a small traditional carpet-making demonstration, and explore a local shopping center for souvenirs and artisan crafts.
