Descrição
Journey with me on a 3-day adrenaline filled adventure to Sipi Falls. Hike to the falls, abseil down a 65-meter waterfall, zipline across the gorge, and learn about the Sabiny culture.
Day 1: Arrival at Sipi Guest House and Waterfall Hike
Begin your adventure with a morning pickup and set off to Kapchorwa in the Mt. Elgon hills. Check in, freshen up, and have lunch on the terrace. The guest house sits directly above the gorge, offering your first view of the main falls from your table.
In the afternoon, start with a guided descent to the first falls called the forest trail. Then hike upstream to the second falls, followed by the main (tallest) falls viewpoint. The total circuit is 3–4 hours at a comfortable pace. Your guide will explain Sabiny culture and point out chameleons and hornbills en route.
At the second falls, detour behind the waterfall curtain into the cave. The air inside is cool, misty, and ancient. Down at the plunge pool of the first falls, dip your feet in and look up for the best camera angle of the day. Return to Sipi Guest House for relaxation and dinner.
Day 2: Abseiling and Ziplining
After breakfast, hike to the lip of the main falls with your guide. Receive a full safety briefing, harness fitting, and rope check before you approach the edge. Then, abseil directly down the waterfall, 65 meters of open air with the Kapchorwa plains stretching to the horizon below. The descent takes 15–20 minutes depending on your pace. Photography will be done by the guide at the top.
Immediately after abseiling, move to the zipline launch point at Sipi Falls guest house. The line is 1.1 km long and runs across the gorge, giving you a bird's-eye glide over the valley. Return to Sipi Guest House, change into dry clothes, have lunch, and rest through the early afternoon heat.
In the afternoon, take a flat, easy walk through the gorge floor below the falls, where the river is wide and reed-lined. Then, climb up the escarpment ridge above the falls, a steep but manageable 45-minute climb through terraced farmland and open moorland. At the top, a flat ridge opens into 270° unobstructed views: the Kapchorwa valley below, the plains stretching east toward Kenya, and Mt. Elgon's forested flanks rising behind you. Return to the guest house for a fireside dinner.
Day 3: Coffee Tour and Departure
Begin the day with a relaxed breakfast. Walk into the coffee shamba and learn to identify ripe Arabica cherries by color and firmness. Hand-pick your own beans. Then, wet-pulp using a hand-cranked machine, wash the beans in fermentation water, and sun-dry on raised bamboo beds. The tour ends with roasting over a charcoal fire, hand-grinding in a wooden mortar, and drinking the cup you made.
Walk one last time to the main falls viewpoint. You know this place differently now because you've toured it on a rope, through the gorge below it, up the ridge above it, and into the cave beside it.
Participate in a closing ritual led by the guide. Set off to Kampala for a drop-off at the pickup point.
