Settle into your seat and get ready to watch the longest-running and most popular nighttime cultural performance in Zhangjiajie. Since its debut in 2000, the show has been performed over 7,000 times and welcomed more than 16 million audience members from China and around the world.
The show runs approximately 1.5 hours and is divided into two parts: an indoor theatrical performance and an outdoor spectacle on the Cultural Square. The indoor show features four themed chapters — Romantic Xiangxi, Mysterious Xiangxi, Enthusiastic Xiangxi, and Joyful Xiangxi — performed by artists from the local Miao and Tujia ethnic minority communities in vivid traditional costumes.
Highlights include authentic Miao drum dancing, the Tujia "Crying Wedding" (Kujia) ceremony, the ancient Maogusi dance depicting primitive life, the communal "Closing Banquet" (Helongyan) ritual, and the enigmatic Xiangxi corpse-driving performance that reveals one of the region's most mysterious folk traditions.
After the indoor performance, move to the outdoor Cultural Square for the grand finale. This segment showcases breathtaking real stunts from Xiangxi's traditional folk arts: performers climb ladders made of sharpened blades ("Climbing the Mountain of Swords") and leap barefoot through roaring flames ("Descending into the Sea of Fire").
The evening concludes with a communal bonfire celebration where audience members are invited to join performers in traditional song and dance under the open sky.
