A captivating, unique installation takes you into the minds of the most notorious serial killers in history and into the investigations against them – a journey into the depths of the psyche.
The dark side of human nature is illuminated through exhibits, documentaries, virtual reality experiences, psychological assessments, and hyper-realistic replicas. Visitors explore the truth behind the headlines, delve into disturbing abysses, and gain insights into the modus operandi of criminal personalities. The exhibition highlights cases of historical figures such as the Roman poisoner Locusta, as well as notorious perpetrators of the 20th century such as Jeffrey Dahmer, who committed murders in the US between 1978 and 1991 and was later killed by a fellow inmate. The exhibition is complemented by cases from the German-speaking world: for example, the case of Jack Unterweger, who became known as the "prison poet" after his first conviction and was released early on the initiative of prominent supporters – only to take the lives of eleven sex workers within a year. The story of Fritz Honka, who murdered and mutilated women from the Reeperbahn milieu in Hamburg in the 1970s, is also addressed.
On a roughly 90-minute journey through twenty stations, visitors discover the people behind the monsters. History, psychology, and cultural influence are highlighted, as are controversial cases, including Kieran Patrick Kelly. The Irishman, born in 1930, claimed to have killed dozens of people in London over decades. In the end, he was only convicted of two proven murders. The actual number of his victims remains unclear to this day.
In a reconstructed investigation office, visitors gain insights into the creation of perpetrator profiles, investigation processes, and the role of human intuition in solving complex serial crimes.
Subsequently, the exhibition analyzes the personality profiles and motivational structures of more than twenty historical felons. Specially designed rooms with profile boards, crime scene reconstructions, and replicas of personal items provide a disturbing insight into the psyche of these perpetrators.
In a separate gallery, pop culture enthusiasts can discover how books, plays, films and series reflect the fascination with the evil in people. The exhibition shows how the media blurs the line between fact and fiction by stylizing criminals as deterrent figures or unforgettable villains.
"SERIAL KILLERS – The True Crime Exhibition" offers a unique virtual reality (VR) experience that uses state-of-the-art technology to put visitors in the role of investigators.
