Beskrivning
Trace how water shaped Kanazawa from Nagamachi to the castle and Kenrokuen. Explore historic canals, stone walls, gates, and garden design with a private local guide.
Discover Kanazawa through the waterways, architecture, and landscape design that shaped the historic castle town.
Begin in the Nagamachi Samurai District, where canals flow beside narrow streets, earthen walls, and former samurai residences.
Follow sections of the Onosho and Kuratsuki canals while learning how water supported life in Kanazawa. Hear how the canals were used to transport materials, provide water for daily life and fire prevention, and power waterwheels for local industries.
See how the waterways became part of the streetscape and helped connect samurai neighborhoods, commercial areas, and the castle town.
Continue to Oyama Shrine and examine its distinctive gate, which combines Japanese, Chinese, and European architectural influences. Learn about Maeda Toshiie, the ruling Maeda family, and the shrine’s place in Kanazawa’s history.
Cross Nezumitamon Bridge and pass through the reconstructed Nezumitamon Gate into Kanazawa Castle Park. Discover how the bridge and gate were restored using archaeological findings and historical records.
Enter Gyokuseninmaru Garden, a reconstructed daimyo garden within the castle grounds. See how water, stone walls, elevation, and carefully arranged views create a landscape that combines the defensive character of a castle with artistic garden design.
Continue through Kanazawa Castle Park and examine its gates, roofs, defensive features, reconstructed buildings, and different styles of stone walls. Learn how the castle changed over time and how military function was combined with craftsmanship and visual beauty.
Finish in Kenrokuen Garden, with admission included. Discover how ponds, streams, trees, lanterns, elevations, and framed views create a changing experience as you walk.
Learn about the six attributes represented by the name Kenrokuen: spaciousness, tranquility, artifice, antiquity, water sources, and magnificent views. Look for examples of these qualities throughout the garden with your private guide.
The tour finishes inside Kenrokuen Garden, where you can continue exploring independently after the guided experience.
