Discover the story of Vlad the Impaler, often associated with Bram Stoker’s fictional Count Dracula, on a full-day sightseeing tour from Bucharest.
Your guide will pick you up from your hotel at 08:00, and set off for Targoviste on the bank of the Ialomiţa River. One of the most important cities of Wallachia, it was capital of the region in the 15th and 16th centuries. Your guide will give you plenty of information about the history of Romania en route.
Upon arrival, learn about Vlad the Impaler, Prince of Wallachia between 1431 and 1477. Also known as “Dracula,” this given name was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s 19th-century novel, and the myths that followed. Marvel at the golden Chindia Tower (Sunset Tower) in the Curtea Domnească complex, part of the remains of the Royal Court.
Drive on to the monastery of the Curtea de Arges, another medieval capital of Wallachia. Explore one of the most beautiful monastic sites of Romania, and learn the ghoulish legend of the workers who built it.
After lunch, climb 1,480 steps to reach the real fortress of Dracula at Poenari Castle. The climb should take about 20-30 minutes, but the breathtaking views are ample reward. Unravel the true story of one of Romania’s most infamous characters, as you gaze out over the mountains and valleys of the Argeș.
En route back to Bucharest, stop at Vidraru Lake, built in the 1960s right next to the famous Transfăgărășan road across the highest mountains in Romania.
