Beskrivning

Explore Greenwich Village on a guided walking tour. Discover historic landmarks, learn about the Village's impact on the '60's counter culture movement, civil rights, folk and jazz music and theater.
Greenwich Village is one of the most beautiful and historic neighborhoods
in New York City. The tour begins at the famous Washington Square Park and Washington Square Arch. Experience the excitement and energy of Washington Square Park, the home of mass demonstrations, students, concerts, street performers, and speeches promoting various social causes. The Washington Square Arch (1895) was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
We proceed to the site of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, where 146, mostly young women, lost their lives on March 25, 1911. We discuss how this horrific event impacted subsequent labor and justice movements and the enactment of factory building fire safety laws and regulations in New York City.
We will view "The Row" townhouses (1833). The artist Edward Hopper, known for his portrayals of American life and landscapes lived at No. 3 Washington Square North.
We continue to Mark Twain's Residence at 14 West 10th Street, where the author of "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" lived between 1900 to 1901. The residence is known to be haunted by Mark Twain and paranormal events have occurred here.
Next, we view the Jefferson Market Library and former sites of the Jefferson Market Courthouse (1876) and Women's House of Detention (1932-71). The Courthouse has a stunning Victorian Gothic design and clock tower.
We continue to the Stonewall Inn and National Monument and Visitor Center, the site of the uprising for gay and LGBTQ civil rights in June, 1969 that inspired the ongoing Gay Rights Movement and subsequent civil rights laws.
We visit Marie's Crises Cafe, the site where Thomas Paine, who inspired the Patriots in 1776 to rebel against Great Britain, died in 1809.
Then, we view 90 Bedford St., the apartment building film setting for the home of the main characters of the comedy television series “Friends”.
We continue to the Isaacs-Hendrick's House (1799), the oldest house in the village, and 75 1/2 Bedford St., the narrowest house in the city, measuring only 9 ½ feet wide.
Next, we view the Aaron Burr House. Aaron Burr, the Vice President during Thomas Jefferson's administration, owned this property. Aaron Burr is portrayed in the hit Broadway musical, "Hamilton".
The tour continues to the dynamic Bleeker Street, the location of trendsetting folk music clubs and popular restaurants that includes the Bitter End, Kenny's Castaway and Cafe Wha that presented Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, The Grateful Dead, Barbara Streisand and Lady Gaga performances during their early careers.
We visit the former site of Cafe Au Go Go, where comedian Lenny Bruce was jailed for obscenity charges after doing his comedy act in 1964. Lenny Bruce's impact on expanding free speech rights in the US continues today.
We conclude the tour at the former site of Gerde's Folk City, that featured Bob Dylan, the Mamas and Papas, the Byrds, Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin.
