Enjoy a peaceful boat ride on West Lake in Hangzhou. Sip on West Lake Longjing tea, paint a traditional paper fan, and feed wild ducks as you take in the serene atmosphere.
This three-hour afternoon experience invites you to enjoy West Lake the way Chinese nobles and literati once did—slowly, quietly, and with attention to small pleasures. Rather than focusing on landmarks or historical facts, the experience centers on atmosphere, companionship, and the rhythm of the lake itself.

The journey begins at 1:00 PM at the southern end of Su Causeway, a historic path long loved by locals for its open views, willow trees, and gentle connection between land and water. Here, you’ll meet your local companion—not a guide delivering rehearsed commentary, but a friend who enjoys sharing West Lake as part of everyday life. After a brief introduction, you’ll take a relaxed walk along the causeway, stopping to taste a few local snacks linked to West Lake’s stories and traditions. These simple bites are the kind locals enjoy during an afternoon stroll and help set the unhurried tone for the experience.

From Su Causeway, you’ll continue on foot to Ma Jia Wan Pier, a quieter dock away from the busiest parts of the lake. Upon arrival, you’ll board a traditional wooden hand-rowed boat. With no engine noise, the boat moves gently across the water, allowing you to hear the lake itself—the splash of oars, distant voices, and the soft movement of birds.

The boat follows a scenic route through some of West Lake’s most peaceful areas, including Inner West Lake, the West Lake State Guesthouse, the archways beneath Yang Gong Causeway, Turtle Pond, Jihong Bridge, Yuhuwan, Small South Lake, and finally Flower Harbor Viewing Fish. Along the way, the scenery shifts naturally between shaded waterways, open stretches of water, and garden-lined shores, offering a layered view of the lake rarely experienced from land.

During the ride, you’ll enjoy West Lake Longjing tea, brewed simply and sipped slowly while drifting on the water. This quiet tea moment encourages conversation, reflection, or comfortable silence, depending on your mood. You’ll also take part in a traditional paper fan painting experience, using brush and ink to write characters or create simple drawings inspired by the surroundings. No prior experience is needed—the focus is on expression rather than technique—and the finished fan becomes a personal keepsake from the afternoon.

As the boat glides through calmer sections of the lake, ducks often approach. You’ll have the chance to feed them, a small but charming interaction that reflects how closely local life is intertwined with West Lake’s natural environment.

Throughout the journey, your local companion participates alongside you, sharing stories, daily observations, or simply enjoying the lake together. The experience concludes near Flower Harbor Viewing Fish around 4:00 PM, leaving you with a deeper, more intimate impression of West Lake—not just as a famous attraction, but as a living space shaped by time, water, and quiet human presence.
