The oak tree was planted in 1830, in celebration of this event. You would never guess that his little quiet town was the center of one of the most well-known religious revolutions in the world.
The events that unfolded here in the 16th Century changed the foundations of Christendom. It was here where Martin Luther lived and preached, and on October 31, 1517, he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church. The Protestant Reformation had begun. Sometimes called the “Rome of the Protestants”, many Luther memorial sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996.
