The stunning Omo Valley is home to a fascinating mosaic of numerous small and unique ethnic groups, all of which have lived in relative isolation for more than a thousand years.Every tribe has its own unique way of life. These indigenous communities develop innovative solutions to satisfy their creative needs in the absence of conventional resources. Body painting is an art form practiced by some of these indigenous communities; members use clays and plant pigments found in the area to create elaborate designs that people then wear on their bodies.
In this fascinating area, you have the opportunity to observe long-standing traditions and learn about the symbolic meanings that are still deeply ingrained in daily life. An totally one-of-a-kind wilderness is the Omo Valley.
Day 1: Jinka to Turmi via Market Upon arrival, meet your guide at the airport and travel to Turmi, stopping to visit the Key Afer Market en route. Stop by Hammer village in the late afternoon. The Hamer are one of the most well-known tribes in Ethiopia's Omo Valley. They are known for their welcoming nature and distinctively stylish haircuts for women. The Hamer Land is where most of the inhabitants call home. On the southern side, it borders Kenya; on the eastern side, Chew Bahir; on the northern side, Bena Land; and on the western side, the Omo River. Along with the Karo, Dasenech, Arbore, Stemaya, and Gnangatom tribes, they have neighbors to the south and west. Approximately 50,000 people identify as Hamers today.
Day 2: Journey to Desanche
Get in the car and head to Omorate; then, take a native boat over the Omo River to see the Dasennech (or Galeb) people. You will then drive to Jinka for an overnight stay after returning to Turmi. If there is a traditional Hamer wedding ritual called Jumping of the Bulls, you will be informed about it beforehand.
Third Day: Jinka to Muris and Addis Abeba
Visiting the Mursi people begins with an early morning drive to Mago National Park. The Mursi are an ethnic group that call the Omo Valley—now included in Mago National Park—their home in southern Ethiopia. After your tour, you can travel to Jinka airport and fly back to Addis Ababa. The Mursi are famous for two things: first, the enormous lip plates that the ladies wear, and second, the violent stick fighting duals that the males participate in.
