From Jinka: 9-Day Surma & Omo Valley Tribes photography Tour

Discover the Omo Valley's diverse tribes on a 9-day tour from Addis Ababa. Experience the unique cultures of the Mursi, Surma, and Karo tribes, and enjoy a mix of camping and lodging.
Day 1: Addis Ababa to Jinka
Arrive in Jinka and be picked up from the airport. Check in to your hotel and visit an Ari village in the afternoon. Learn about their lifestyle, see how they make local alcohol, and discover their handcraft and iron smith skills. Spend the night at a hotel in Jinka.

Day 2: Jinka to Hana Mursi

After breakfast, drive to Hana Mursi, home of the Bodi Tribe. Stop at some viewpoints along the way. Upon arrival, set up your camp and enjoy a lunch break. In the afternoon, explore the Bodi Tribe village and take photos. Spend the night camping.

Day 3: Hana Mursi to Surma Kibish

In the early morning, visit a cattle camp for more photo opportunities. Return to camp for breakfast, then drive to Surma land, stopping at viewpoints along the way. Arrive in Kibish in the late afternoon, set up your camp, and interact with the local Surma tribe. Spend the night camping.

Day 4: Surma Photography

Spend the day photographing the Suri tribe, known for their ornate decoration achieved through painting, scarification, and adornment with flowers and other natural objects. If you’re lucky, attend a traditional stick fight, a seasonal event. Spend the night camping.

Day 5: Surma to Nyangatom

After an early breakfast, depart for Kangaten, the heart of the Nyangatom Tribes, crossing the Omo River on a newly built bridge. Encounter different wild animals as you cross Omo National Park. Upon arrival in Kangaten, set up your camp and enjoy an evening photo shoot. Spend the night camping at a Nyangatom village.

Day 6: Nyangatom to Karo to Turmi

In the morning, visit a Nyangatom village. Discover their famous labial piercings and oratory gifts. Continue to Murele and visit the Karo people, known for their elaborate body-painting. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the banks of the Omo River. Arrive in Turmi in the afternoon, check in to your lodge, and spend time with the Hamer tribe. If you’re lucky, attend a bull jump ceremony and a night dance called Evangadi. Spend the night at a lodge in Turmi.

Day 7: Dassench to Konso to Arbaminch

In the early morning, make an excursion to Omorate, east of the Omo River. Cross the river by a small boat and walk 20 minutes to the Gelab (Dassanech) tribal village. Learn about their body painting and scarification. Drive to Arbaminch, stopping at a local weekly market and visiting a Konso village. Discover the Konso people’s unique culture,Spend the night at a hotel in Arbaminch.

Day 8: Nech Sar Park to Dorze Village

In the early morning, drive to Lake Chamo’s crocodile market. Then, drive to Dorze village. Learn about the Dorze Tribe’s unique bamboo houses, intricate weaving skills, and vibrant cultural heritage. Spend the night at a lodge in Dorze.

Day 9: Dorze to Addis Ababa

In the morning, drive to Abijata and Shala National Park. Visit Lake Shala and Lake Abijata, where you can spot ostriches, Grant’s gazelles, and thousands of flamingos. Afterward, drive back to Addis Ababa, where your tour ends.
