Discover the Absheron Peninsula and Gobustan on a guided day tour from Baku. Visit the Gala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex, the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, and more.
Begin your day with a pickup from your hotel in Baku and head to the Absheron Peninsula. Your first stop is the Gala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex, a 1.5-hectare open-air museum that offers a glimpse into Azerbaijan’s rich history and culture.
Explore the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography, which showcases over 2,000 artifacts, including rock paintings, pottery, jewelry, and weapons. See an 18th-century tandoor, underground passages from the 10th–15th centuries, and traditional dwellings.
Next, visit the Castle Museum, featuring a restored medieval castle dating back to the 10th–12th centuries. Discover excavated bread ovens, ceramic fragments, iron tools, and underground passages thought to lead toward the seaside and city center.
Continue to the Gala Antiques Museum, which houses a rich assortment of Azerbaijani antiques, widely exhibited in international cities. See around 800 pieces that form the core of this unique collection.
Finally, visit the Waste to Art Museum, which displays around 180 artworks created from recycled household materials, emphasizing environmental creativity and sustainable design.
After 90 minutes at the complex, head to the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum. This premier cultural institution on the Seaside Boulevard is dedicated to the preservation and display of the Azerbaijani carpet-weaving tradition. The museum houses more than 6,000 items, including carpets from the 17th to 20th centuries representing seven regional schools, traditional textiles and costumes, ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, woodwork, and rotating exhibitions.
Next, visit the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, a significant institution located in the Old City (Icherisheher). Founded in 1976 and set in a classicist building, the museum’s collection is from the recent archaeological research carried out in all over Azerbaijan area.
Finally, head to the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Gobustan Museum, which exhibits rock engravings dating back to the Stone Age, with more than 6,000 drawings illustrating hunting scenes, rituals, animals, and daily activities.
Then, explore the Gobustan Rock Shelters, which contain thousands of Stone Age petroglyphs depicting a wide variety of subjects. The natural caves and shelters served as living spaces for early humans and were also used for rituals and communal gatherings. Archaeological findings include tools, pottery, and remnants of ancient dwellings that reveal the lifestyle of prehistoric communities.
After completing the visit to Gobustan, return to Baku.
