Eat your way through Colombo with 15+ tastings, from Pettah Market and old eateries to smoky grills and a Sri Lankan arrack nightcap.
Colombo changes character when daylight disappears. Pettah's markets spill into the evening, old tea shops stay busy and charcoal smoke begins drifting from grills across the city. It's a food scene built over centuries at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean, where Arab, South Indian and European influences were absorbed, adapted and made unmistakably Sri Lankan.

Tonight we're diving straight into it. Over four hours and 15+ tastings, eat your way from the colourful streets of Pettah to the smoky grills around Abdul Hameed Street, travelling mostly by foot, but also using a tuk tuk when the distance is too far, before finishing with a Sri Lankan nightcap in historic Fort.

Begin beneath the candy-striped minarets of Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque with a ritual Sri Lankans take very seriously: tea and something sweet. Spoon into silky watalappan, a coconut custard darkened with jaggery and fragrant with spice, followed by sesame-packed thala guli and soft adai sponge cake. Wash it all down with a steaming cup of milky Ceylon tea.

Then duck into a humble local institution that's been feeding Colombo since the 1950s. Delicate string hoppers arrive alongside crisp ulundu vadai, steaming sambar and punchy red and coconut chutneys. Next, we'll go back another twenty years at a neighbourhood favourite dating to the 1930s, where freshly fried chicken samosas meet sweet-sharp nelli juice made from Indian gooseberry.

There's still an egg hopper to conquer: fermented rice-and-coconut batter cooked into a bowl with impossibly crisp, lacy edges and a soft egg at its centre.

Then dive into Pettah Market. Thread between traders and overflowing produce stalls, sampling whatever tropical fruits are best that day before cracking open an ice-cool king coconut.

As darkness settles, we'll follow the charcoal smoke. Jump aboard a tuk tuk and head for Abdul Hameed Street, where the grills are firing and the serious eating begins. Attack fragrant Sri Lankan chicken biryani and masala-marinated chicken blistered over charcoal. Tear apart flaky cheese paratha and load it with maasi sambol, an intensely savoury combination of dried Maldive fish, chilli and onion. Cool the heat with creamy raita before finishing with cold, milky kulfi.

Four hours and 15+ tastings later, there's one final ride. Head into Fort, Colombo's historic colonial quarter, and raise a glass of arrack. Distilled from the fermented sap of coconut flowers, this distinctive island spirit has been part of Sri Lankan drinking culture for centuries.
