Discover Bulgaria's most surreal landmark, the Buzludzha Monument, a colossal communist-era flying saucer. Step back even further in time with a visit to a remarkable 5th-century BC Thracian tomb.
Few places on Earth stop travelers in their tracks quite like the Buzludzha Monument. Rising from the peaks of the Central Balkan Mountains like a spaceship frozen in time, this abandoned communist-era congress hall is one of the most photographed and talked-about sites in all of Europe. And one of the hardest to reach on your own. This full-day tour from Sofia takes care of everything, leaving you free to simply experience it.

Your day begins with a pickup from Alexander Nevski Cathedral. As your expert guide steers you east through the Bulgarian countryside, the stories begin: the turbulent 20th century, the rise and fall of communism, the peculiar ambition behind Buzludzha's construction, and what it means to Bulgarians today. By the time the monument's silhouette appears on the horizon, you'll understand why it's earned a cult following around the world.

At Buzludzha, you'll witness the monument's dramatic scale up close: the sweeping flying-saucer form, the monumental socialist hands sculpture at the base, and a 70-meter tower crowned with giant red stars. Though the interior is currently closed for conservation by the Buzludzha Project Foundation, the exterior and mountain setting are genuinely breathtaking. Your guide will share stories of the legendary mosaics, the grand hall, and explain the ongoing international effort to preserve this extraordinary piece of architectural heritage.

After lunch at the nearby Buzludzha Hut (a chance to taste authentic Bulgarian cuisine), your next stop is the Shipka Memorial Church: one of the most breathtaking and emotionally resonant buildings in all of Bulgaria. Built in the early 20th century to commemorate the Bulgarian and Russian soldiers who died defending the Shipka Pass during the Liberation War of 1877–78, the church is an arresting sight: golden domes gleaming against the backdrop of the Balkan Mountains, its Russian Orthodox architecture feeling almost impossibly grand for its quiet hillside setting.
Your day takes a fascinating turn as you descend into the Valley of Roses to visit the Thracian Tomb of Seuthes III. Dating to the 5th century BC, this beautifully preserved royal tomb offers a striking contrast to the modernist monument above.

By early evening, you'll be back in Sofia, dropped at Alexander Nevski Cathedral, with memories of a day that spans two and a half thousand years of human drama in a single unforgettable sweep.
