Birdwatching to Biotopo del Quetzal from Antigua Guatemala

Escape to the cloud forests of Baja Verapaz and experience one of Guatemala’s most beautiful nature reserves: the Biotopo del Quetzal, a sanctuary created to protect the Resplendent Quetzal—Guatemala’s national bird and a sacred symbol of Mayan culture.

We depart early from Antigua Guatemala or Guatemala City, heading toward the lush green mountains of Purulhá. Along the scenic drive, you’ll pass through rural highland landscapes and small towns before arriving at the Mario Dary Rivera Nature Reserve, better known as Biotopo del Quetzal.

Upon arrival, we’ll begin our guided hike through well-marked trails that wind through a magical cloud forest filled with moss-covered trees, orchids, ferns, and the sound of birdsong all around. The hike is peaceful and moderate, taking about 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the pace and route.

Keep your eyes open for the Resplendent Quetzal—especially in the early morning—and other wildlife such as hummingbirds, squirrels, and butterflies. Along the way, we’ll visit small waterfalls and enjoy moments of quiet surrounded by pure nature.

After the hike, we’ll enjoy a typical lunch at a nearby local restaurant before starting our return journey in the afternoon, arriving back in the city by early evening.
