Visiting historic Segobriga, ancient Roman town near Madrid

Segóbriga was a Celtic and Roman city and is an impressive site still under excavation. It was initially a Celtiberian Castro (fortress). After its Roman conquest at the beginning of the 2nd century BC, Segóbriga had to become an “Oppidum” or Celtiberian city. In the 4th century, it started to decline. At the Visigoth time, as of the 5th century, it still had to be an important city, but after the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, it was abandoned.

Modern excavations have revealed the existence of well-preserved Roman buildings, like the Theather, Amphitheatre, Circus, Thermae, Forum, Basilica, etc.
It's one of the best-preserved ancient Roman towns in Spain. Modern excavations have revealed the importance of a middle-sized Roman town.

The "Mora Encantada" mine is an ancient Roman mine in use until the 3rd century. It has been restored to allow visitors to see it. It's intact as it was left by the Romans. a unique experience.

ITINERARY:

I will pick you up at an agreed meeting point in Madrid and drive you in a rented vehicle until we arrive in Segóbriga and start our walking tour.
1. Outside Town. Roman and Visigoth necropolis, Roman Circus, Visigoth church.
2. Roman Amphitheatre.
3. Roman Theater. Very well preserved having been buried for centuries.
4. Thermae.
5. - Forum and Basilica
6. - Walk around the uphill town.
7. - Visit the Museum.

We'll go then to visit the "mora Encantada" mine. and amazing old "Lapis Specularis" mine carved by the Romans. It's more than 40 meters of depth. Several galleries can be visited, and there are a lot of gypsum crystals in the rock. Simply astonishing.

Most tourists who come to Madrid don't know about the existence of Segobriga, so you'll have the chance of knowing a real Roman town that is around 2, 500 years old, no need to go to Italy!
