Step into history at Albert Hall Museum, Jaipur—where stunning Indo-Saracenic architecture meets rare treasures, including a 2,300-year-old Egyptian mummy!
Begin your walk at the front lawns of the Albert Hall Museum, Jaipur’s oldest museum, opened in 1887. Designed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, its Indo-Saracenic architecture is a blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European styles.
Take a moment to admire the multiple domes, arched corridors, and stone jali (lattice) work on the exterior. It looks especially stunning during the evening light show.
Enter the main building and begin with the Egyptian Mummy, one of the most popular exhibits here. It's housed in the Egypt & Foreign Art Gallery, offering a glimpse of global cultures.
Next, proceed through the various galleries on the ground floor, which include:
* Textile Gallery: Rare garments, Mughal-era robes, Persian carpets, and tie-dye textiles from Rajasthan.
* Jewellery & Metal Art Gallery: Traditional Rajasthani silver jewelry and ritual items.
* Arms & Armour Gallery: Swords, daggers, helmets — many used in actual battles by Rajput warriors.
* Musical Instruments: Folk instruments, including sarangis, been, and drums.
In the central atrium, observe replica models of traditional Jaipur crafts and large paintings on the walls. From here, the museum branches into side wings.
You’ll also see Ivory and Wood Carvings – including an ornate howdah (elephant seat) and furniture used by nobility.
Head upstairs to explore:
* Miniature Paintings: Schools of Mughal, Rajput, Persian, and Pahari art with vivid scenes from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
* Pottery & Ceramics: Glazed tiles from the Middle East, blue pottery from Jaipur, and Chinese ceramics.
* International Artifacts: Japanese dolls, Persian calligraphy, and European paintings.
The upper floor also offers a good panoramic view of the front garden and Ram Niwas Garden beyond.
One of the museum’s most unusual features is the Health Gallery, with 19th-century clay models that depict diseases like plague, cholera, and the importance of hygiene. These were educational tools during colonial times.
Exit through the gift shop area, where you can pick up books or miniature art prints. If you're here after sunset, stay for the illuminated night view of the Albert Hall — it’s one of the best-lit buildings in Jaipur.
