Surabaya or Malang: 3 Days 2 Nights Tumpak Sewu, Bromo, and Ijen

Imagine standing at the base of a giant waterfall, then hiking from midnight to two volcanoes to see the crater and a sunrise you'll never forget. For three days, you'll be taken around East Java's best mountains, starting in Surabaya or Malang.

This multi-day trip takes in some of East Java's most breathtaking spots. Perfect for those coming from western Indonesia and wanting to continue to other islands around Java. Along the way, you'll explore waterfalls and two iconic volcanoes.

Amenities:
Stay at a simple guesthouse near Bromo.
Small hotel in Bondowoso.
Breakfast is included; for Ijen, the breakfast is in a box.

Transportation:
MPV for groups of up to 4 people, or a large van for groups of up to 8 people.

About Schedule and Destinations:
The trip can begin on the first day after arriving by morning train from Yogyakarta or the morning after a late flight from another city.

Day 1:
Depart from Surabaya at 6 a.m., depart from Malang at 8 a.m.
Around 10-11 a.m., arrive at Tumpak Sewu, a legendary waterfall south of Malang. The name "Tumpak Sewu" means "a thousand," because the water falls from a height of 200 meters, resembling a giant curtain on the cliff.
At 2 p.m., finish exploring, change clothes, and take a short break.
At 3 p.m., continue walking from the waterfall area.
At 4 p.m., stop for lunch.
Around 6 p.m., arrive at your accommodation near Bromo.

Day 2:
At 2 a.m., get ready for the trip to Mount Bromo in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. This national park is vast—we'll be riding in a jeep driven by a local.
At 5 a.m., enjoy the sunrise.
At 6:30 a.m., ride the jeep down to the sea of sand in the caldera.
At 7:30 a.m., trek to Widodaren and the Bromo crater.
Around 9-9:30 a.m., finish exploring Bromo.
At 10-10:30 a.m., have breakfast and shower, and get ready to check out.
At 11 a.m., depart for Bondowoso, stopping for lunch along the way.
At 2-2:30 p.m., arrive in Bondowoso and check into your hotel.

Day 3:
The climb to Ijen starts much earlier than to Bromo, even before midnight.
11:00 PM on the second day, the two-hour drive to the Ijen basecamp. Take it easy, you can sleep in the car.
1:30 AM: Arrive at basecamp for a short briefing.
2:00 AM: Begin the climb.
3:30 AM: Descend to the crater to see the famous blue flames.
4:00 AM: Arrive at the blue flames.
5:00 AM: Climb back to the summit for sunrise.
6:30 AM: Descend back to basecamp.
8:00 AM: Breakfast at basecamp.
8:30 AM: Continue to Ketapang Harbor (ferry tickets are ready), and return to Surabaya or Malang.

A few quick notes:

You need to head out early to dodge traffic and crowds and to make sure you catch the main sights. This isn’t a private tour, so you’ll be with a group. And on Day 1, pack some extra snacks or fruit because we’ll miss lunch during the waterfall adventure.

Don’t forget to pack some snacks or personal food, especially if you have a special diet. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a dust mask if you think you’ll need it. A waterproof bag comes in handy, and you’ll need some IDR cash too.
For Tumpak Sewu, wear light pants and a t-shirt, and throw in a swimsuit and trekking sandals. Bring a change of dry clothes for after, since you’ll probably get wet. If you don’t have water shoes, no worries—you can rent a pair there.
Heading to Bromo and Ijen? You’ll want warm clothes or a jacket, a light shirt underneath, and good shoes.
Rain or shine, your trip’s on.
