The construction of this ancient city began 500 years before Christ. For a thousand years, the Zapotecs controlled the central region of Oaxaca, until it was abandoned after its urban expansion in 800 AD.
The true reason for the construction of a majestic ceremonial center on a mountain is unknown. It took at least 200 years to complete the first phase of construction. It is unknown why the Zapotec writing system was also abandoned along with hundreds of structures such as the ball court, hundreds of stelae carved with glyphs, ceramic objects, and human and animal bones.
