After pickup in Funchal, travel uphill towards Monte through steep hillside streets, enjoying changing views over the city, the bay and the surrounding green hills.

At Monte, stop near the official basket sledge starting point at Largo da Fonte. I’ll explain the history behind this unique Madeira tradition, give you practical information about the ride and show you exactly where to find me afterwards.

The basket sledge ticket is not included and must be purchased directly from the independent official operators.

If you choose to take the basket ride, I’ll travel to the arrival area and meet you there. When timing and conditions allow, I’ll also try to capture a short video of part of your descent so you can keep the moment without leaving someone behind the camera.

Once we are back together, continue by Tuk-Tuk towards Funchal’s historic Old Town. Travel through the narrow streets around Rua de Santa Maria, see its famous painted doors and discover historic corners and small local places as I share stories about the city and everyday life in Madeira.

Waiting times for the basket sledge can vary because the ride is operated independently. If queues are longer than expected, the time available for the Old Town portion may be adapted.

This is a fully private experience for your group, with no other guests and no rushed, scripted tour. The pace and small parts of the route can be adjusted whenever possible according to your interests and the conditions on the day.

Along the way, I’ll also give you honest local recommendations for restaurants, cafés, poncha bars, viewpoints and other places worth visiting during the rest of your stay.

At the end of the experience, I’ll give you a small symbolic keepsake to remember your time in Madeira.

The basket sledges are one of Madeira’s most distinctive traditions, and I still enjoy sharing their story no matter how many times I return to Monte. My aim is for you to leave with more than a fun ride: a genuine feeling for the history, streets and traditions that make Funchal special.
