Begin your visit with the ascent of the 226 steps leading to the summit of the mound. The climb is steady but entirely manageable, with several platforms where you can pause and admire the scenery.

Along the way, notice how the mound’s height elevates you far above the surrounding landscape, giving a unique perspective even before you reach the top.

At the summit, be rewarded with a 360° sweeping view of the entire battlefield. From here, clearly see Wellington’s ridgeline, where the Allied army took position, La Haye Sainte, the famous farmhouse at the center of the fight, Hougoumont, the fortified farm attacked for hours, the open fields where Napoleon launched his cavalry charges, and the villages and rolling hills that shaped the outcome of the battle.

Interpretation panels help you understand the troop movements and terrain. On a clear day, the view is spectacular.

At the top, admire a 28-ton bronze lion, facing France. It was placed here in the 1820s as a symbol of European peace and victory after Napoleon’s final defeat. Fun fact: the lion’s paw rests on a globe, representing control over the world.

The mound is one of the best photography locations in Belgium. Find clean horizon lines perfect for panoramic shots, golden fields in summer, dramatic skies in winter, a commanding vantage point for sunrise or sunset, and great angles of the lion statue itself.
