8-Day Lemosho Route Trekking Mount Kilimanjaro

Lemosho route requires a minimum number of days necessary for this route which is seven days. However, eight days are suggested because it allows you extra time to acclimate and reach the summit.
This 8-day Lemosho Route offers gradual acclimatization, diverse scenery (forest, moorland, desert, glaciers), and the highest success rate. Highlights include Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and summit night to Uhuru Peak. Nights are spent at camps ranging from Big Tree to Crater, before finishing at Mweka Gate.

Day 1: Arusha → Londorosi Gate → Big Tree Camp
Elevation: 1,200 m → 2,850 m
Distance: 9 km
Time: 3–4 hrs
Begin with registration at Londorosi Gate, drive to Lemosho Glade, then trek through montane forest with colobus monkeys. Overnight at Big Tree Camp.

Day 2: Big Tree → Shira One Camp
Elevation: 2,850 m → 3,500 m
Distance: 13 km
Time: 8 hrs
Trek across valleys into Shira Caldera, a high-altitude desert formed by volcanic collapse. Camp at Shira One.

Day 3: Shira One → Shira Two Camp (via Cathedral Peak)
Elevation: 3,500 m → 3,800 m
Distance: 7 km
Time: 5–6 hrs
Cross the Shira Plateau and ascend Cathedral Peak (3,850 m) for acclimatization. Camp at Shira Two.

Day 4: Shira Two → Lava Tower (4,600 m) → Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,800 m → 3,950 m
Distance: 13 km
Time: 7–8 hrs
Acclimatization day: ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 m) then descend to Barranco Camp for overnight.

Day 5: Barranco → Karanga (lunch) → Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3,950 m → 3,900 m
Distance: 6 km
Time: 4–5 hrs
Morning climb of the Barranco Wall (4,200 m), then continue across ridges and valleys via Karanga to Barafu Camp. Prepare for summit attempt.

Day 6: Barafu → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak → Crater Camp
Elevation: 4,620 m → 5,895 m → 3,650 m
Distance: 10 km
Time: 7–8 hrs
Steep ascent on scree/snow to Stella Point (5,861 m), then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Descend to Crater Camp for overnight.

Day 7: Crater Camp → Ash Pit (5,750 m) → Mweka Hut
Elevation: 5,650 m → 3,100 m
Distance: 12 km
Time: 7–8 hrs
Morning ascent to Ash Pit, then long descent via Barafu to Mweka Hut through moorland and forest.

Day 8: Mweka Hut → Mweka Gate → Arusha
Elevation: 3,100 m → 1,700 m
Distance: 9 km
Time: 3–4 hrs
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate for check-out and summit certificates. Transfer back to Arusha for celebration.
