Embark on the legendary Marangu Route, the only Kilimanjaro trail offering hut accommodation. Over seven days, you’ll trek through climb alpine deserts before reaching the icy summit of Uhuru Peak.
7 Days Marangu Route Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
You will be picked up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The day is spent relaxing, meeting your mountain guide, and having a briefing and equipment check before the climb begins.
Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,860m) – Mandara Hut (2,700m)
After registration at the Marangu Gate, you start your trek through lush rainforest alive with monkeys and tropical birds. The hike is about 4–5 hours, finishing at Mandara Hut. A short walk to Maundi Crater offers beautiful views.
Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
The trail gradually leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone. Unique plants like giant lobelias and everlasting flowers line the path. After 6–7 hours of trekking, you reach Horombo Hut with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
A vital day for adjusting to the altitude. You will hike towards Zebra Rocks (4,000m) and enjoy panoramic views before returning to Horombo Hut. This day increases your summit success.
Day 5: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
The route crosses the alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The air is thin, and the landscapes are striking. A 5–6 hour hike brings you to Kibo Hut, where you rest early in preparation for the summit attempt.
Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut
Just after midnight, you begin the final ascent. The path is steep and challenging, passing Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and Stella Point (5,756m) before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue to Horombo Hut.
Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi
A final descent through the forest takes 5–6 hours back to Marangu Gate. After receiving your summit certificate, you’ll be transferred to Moshi for relaxation or onward travel.
