Swap the beach for the mountains. Climb a village on a rock, take tea on the floor of a nomad's tent, walk a Berber town abandoned in the 1960s, and stand at the spring that once watered Carthage.
Ninety minutes inland from the beach hotels, three Berber villages sit on three separate rocks. Local people will tell you three brothers built them; the stones are older than the story. You will see all three in a day, plus the Roman spring that made Carthage possible, with a driver-host who lives here rather than a coach and a microphone.

Before you travel we send you the guide: an illustrated PDF explaining every stop, in English, French, German, Italian and Arabic. Read it on the drive or at the table. It is yours to keep, and it means nobody has to shout history over an engine.

Takrouna comes first, best in the morning light. The village stands on a limestone outcrop 200 m above the Sahel plain; from the top you see olive groves running to the sea, Hammamet bay one way and the Zaghouan mountains the other. Its Berber name means, roughly, the fortified place. New Zealand and Maori infantry took this summit from German and Italian troops over three days in April 1943. Two families still live up here, and one of them puts a pot of tea on and brings out tabouna bread and their own olive oil. The tea is on us - nobody passes a hat.

The road then climbs to Jradou, where a craftswoman still works a loom in the old quarter, and on into the hills above it. A nomad family keeps their tent, their sheep and their goats up there, moving with the season as their grandparents did. You will be invited in, shown how the tent is woven and pitched, watch bread go onto the fire, and drink tea sitting on the floor. They are hosts, not a performance: we pay them for the visit, so you are never asked for money at the door.

Zriba El Alia is the one people remember. Built in the 16th century between two rocky peaks, 300 m
up, it emp villagewent up on the plain. What is left is a hillside of roofless stone houses, lanes you can still walk, fig roots splitting the walls, and at the centre the restored 17th-century zaouia of Sidi
AbdelkaderZaghouanfills the sky.

We take you to lunch on a terrace above the valley in Zriba - couscous, salads, bread from a clay oven. The tea is on us. Lunch is extra, and you pay for your own.

Last comes the water. Djebel Zaghouan rises to 1,295 m, the highest point in eastern Tunisia. On its northern flank Hadrian's engineers captured
the springers over itin the second century AD - a semicircle of niches
and tiers, fed by that spring. From here water ran 132 km to Carthage.
Your entral pass theaqueduct arches on the way home.

Your drivethese roadsand these families, and speaks English, French, Italian or Arabic. the PDF does that job.
