Begin your day in Plovdiv's Old Town, an open-air architectural museum built across three hills. Walk past the striking, symmetrical 19th-century mansions. Keep an eye out for Hindliyan House or the Kuyumdzhiev House (which houses the Ethnographic Museum)—their brightly painted facades and cantilevered upper floors are iconic.

Visit the Ancient Roman Theatre, built in the 1st century AD under Emperor Trajan. It is one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the world. The view from the top tiers looking out over the city and the Rhodope Mountains is unmatched.

Walk up to the very top of the hill to see the ruins of the original Thracian settlement dating back over 6,000 years, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Plovdiv.

Next, walk down the hill from the Old Town directly into Kapana. Once a crumbling craftsman’s quarter, Kapana is now a vibrant art district filled with pedestrianized streets, hanging flags, trendy cafes, craft beer bars, and local boutiques.
This is the perfect spot to grab an early lunch before heading into the villages. Try some modern Bulgarian dishes or a craft beer at one of the local bistros.

Leave the city behind and head north into the countryside. You'll arrive at the Starosel Thracian Cult Complex. Walk inside the massive 5th-century BC stone chamber where Thracian kings performed mystical wine rituals.

Finally, visit Staro Zhelezare, a quirky village where the local brick walls serve as a canvas. Walk the streets to find murals of local grandmas alongside politicians, actors, and world icons. It’s an amazing, surreal contrast right after seeing Plovdiv's ancient history.
