Begin your private 2-day tour with a pickup from your hotel in Bishkek. Head to the Burana Tower, a minaret about a thousand years old and the last standing monument of Balasagun, a trading city on the Silk Road. Climb the narrow stairway inside for a view over the valley, walk among the ancient carved stone figures called balbals, and visit the small museum. Next, follow Boom Gorge towards Issyk-Kul. Near the gorge, set off on a hike of 2 to 3 hours into Konorchek Canyon, a maze of red sandstone walls, towers, and columns shaped by wind and water. The hike is moderate and needs no special experience. In the evening, reach the south shore near Bokonbayevo, where a local eagle hunter shows how the golden eagle has been trained and flown for centuries. Hold the eagle on your arm for a photo and ask about this living nomadic tradition. Spend the night in a traditional yurt camp by the lake, with a home-cooked Kyrgyz dinner.

Autumn is a rewarding season to visit Issyk-Kul. With fewer crowds, clear air and warm golden light, the red canyons of the south shore stand out against the deep blue lake and snow-dusted peaks. Your guide and driver pick you up from your hotel in Bishkek in the morning. Continue to Barskoon Gorge and its waterfall. Choose an easy 30-minute walk or a more active hike of around three hours. The final stop is Skazka, or Fairy Tale Canyon, known for its red, orange and golden rock formations resembling castles, dragons and walls. Explore the canyon on foot for about an hour, then have lunch at a local restaurant before driving back to Bishkek, arriving at your hotel in the evening.
