Addis Ababa: Simien Mountains 3-Day Trekking Tour

Embark on a 3-day trekking adventure in the Simien Mountains. Explore the stunning landscapes, spot wildlife, and camp under the stars.
Day 1: Addis-Gondar/Simien Mountains

Begin with a short morning flight to Gondar, the old mountain capital. Drive from Gondar to Debark, where the park headquarters are located. Spend about 30 minutes here to pay entrance fees, pick up a scout, and enjoy some tea or coffee before heading to the mountains.

Continue driving to Michibiny and start an introductory walk to the first campsite, Sankaber. Hike for about 2-3 hours along the plateau, far from the mountain’s edge. Encounter gelada baboons along the way. Spend the night at Sankaber.

Day 2: Sankaber-Gich (3600 m), 5-6 hours

Follow the northern escarpment eastward, descending into the Kaba Valley before climbing up to Gich Abyss. Continue over a narrow ridge to a cliff with spectacular views of the abyss and the Simien foothills. Discover a large waterfall where the Jinbar River plunges 500 m into the abyss.

Proceed for about two hours and have lunch at the Jinbar River. After lunch, walk to Gich camp, a good area to look for lammergeyer and thick-billed raven. After a relaxing afternoon, take a short hike up to Kedadit to enjoy the sunset and the gorgeous shaded landscapes down to the cliffside towards the eastern direction. Return to the camp for dinner.

Day 3: Imet Gogo-Ambarace, 5-6 hrs

From Gich camp, stroll through endless fields of Giant Lobelia before reaching the towering cliffs of Imet-Gogo (3926 m). Spend some time absorbing the superb views over the mountain valleys below and the strange-shaped domes in the distance.

Descend into the Jinbahir River Valley, getting a different perspective of Imet-Gogo and the volcanic landscape. The trail follows the edge of the escarpment, which is completely vertical here for several hundred meters. Keep walking through fields of Erica Arboria plants and grassy paths to Aynameda, where a jeep will be waiting to take you back to Gondar for the night.
