描述

Explore Addis Ababa on a guided walking tour. Visit the Legehar Railway Station, the Lion of Judah monument, the Grand Anwar Mosque, and the bustling Mercato Market.
Begin your walking tour and learn about the historical significance and modern-day relevance of each site you visit.

Visit Legehar, the main railway station in Addis Ababa, the terminal station of the metre-gauge Ethio-Djibouti Railway that connected Ethiopia's capital to the Port of Djibouti. Completed in 1917, the station was a central part of the city and the main source of traffic into the city. The style of the station is French, reflecting the nationality of its builders. The station is no longer in operation, as the metre-gauge railway has been largely superseded by the standard-gauge Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway completed in 2017. The standard-gauge station is located in the outskirts of Addis Ababa.

Next, visit the Lion of Judah monument, located in the square of the Addis Ababa railway station in Addis Ababa and marks the end of Winston Churchill Avenue, one of the main arteries of the city. The sculpture of the Lion of Judah, in gilded bronze, is placed on a black granite pedestal decorated with relief portraits of emperors Menelik II and Haile Selassie, Empress Zewditu, and Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael. The work was made by the French sculptor Georges Gardet in 1930, on the occasion of the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie on 2 November 1930. After the 1974 revolution, the Derg regime thought of removing the monument, a symbol of the monarchy. However, an association of Arbegnoch veterans claimed that it was a memory of Ethiopian antifascist resistance and a symbol of Ethiopia. Therefore, the regime agreed to leave the monument, which is still in front of the Addis Ababa central station. In 1954, a new monument was commissioned by Emperor Haile Selassie from sculptor Maurice Calka, around the National Bank of Ethiopia and the National Theater.

Enjoy an optional snack (fruit salad or/and a little piece of goat meat) and experience local culture by learning some popular Amharic words from your guide. Practise your Amharic as you interact with locals at the various stops including the busy Addis. Mercato Market. Mercato is the largest open-air market in Africa, covering several square miles and employing an estimated 13,000 people in 7,100 business entities. The primary merchandise passing through the Merkato is locally grown agricultural products — most notably coffee.

Discover the Grand Anwar Mosque, located in Merkato, in Arada district of Addis Ababa. It was built by the Italian government around 1922. The mosque is the largest and one of the oldest mosques (masjid) in Addis Ababa. The mosque has unique architecture with white and green colors. After the Italians left unfinished, Muslims collected money to resume the construction.
