Set in the Lazio side of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, this guided hike blends wide-open mountain basins, ancient forests, and one of the area’s most remarkable living landmarks: the Great Maple Tree of Monte Tranquillo.

We start from Rifugio La Castelluccia (Castelluccia area) and follow a scenic trail into Campo Lungo, a broad high-altitude basin where the landscape alternates between open meadows, clearings, and woodland edges. In warmer months, wildflowers paint the grasslands in shifting colour, and the transitions between meadow and forest create an ideal habitat for local wildlife—keep an eye out for tracks and signs along the path.

From there, we enter centuries-old beech woods, walking beneath tall trunks and filtered light typical of the Central Apennines. In this atmospheric setting, we reach the day’s highlight: the Great Maple, a monumental tree that has endured for more than five centuries. Take time to observe its scale and character—an inspiring symbol of resilience and a true natural monument.

After a break, we continue toward the summit of Monte Tranquillo (1,841 m). The climb is rewarded with sweeping 360° views across Lazio and Abruzzo, with peaks, valleys, and ridgelines stretching to the horizon—an ideal moment to pause and take it all in before returning.

The hike is difficulty level E, lasts about 6 hours, and covers around 670 m of elevation gain. It’s best suited to hikers with solid walking fitness and appropriate gear.
