描述

Hike to the ruins of Naegi Castle above the Kiso River with a local guide. See autumn leaves against granite cliffs, learn about local samurai life, and take in panoramic valley views from the summit.
Where the Rock Became the Castle

From late October through November, the ridgeline of Naegi Castle comes alive above the Kiso River, with momiji burning against granite and the valley falling away beneath you. For seven hundred years, this mountain fortress stood here, built not against the landscape, but with it. Set on the boundary between two old provinces, with the river below serving as a natural moat, this rocky ridge was one of the most defensible positions in the region.

From River to Castle

Begin your day with your Rural Japan guide, a local English-speaking expert who knows this land as home, meeting you at your hotel in the Ena–Nakatsugawa area or at JR Ena / Nakatsugawa Station.

Follow the Kiso River into open countryside. As streets give way to forest, the castle ridge appears through the trees. Your guide points out what a visitor would walk straight past and tells the stories this valley still remembers. Persimmons hang heavy on the branches by the roadside, glowing orange against the autumn sky.

At the heritage museum, your guide brings the world of local samurai to life: their daily existence, their loyalties, and the armour that remains from that era.

The ascent is unhurried. Stone walls rise from the outcrops, and a shrine appears among the trees, quietly transformed more than a hundred years ago. At the summit, the panorama opens wide: the Kiso River winding far below, the mountains beyond, and autumn colours spreading across the valley in every direction.

The walk back follows the mountain paths that samurai once used, taking a different route to Nakatsugawa Station. Before you part, your guide points you to the places locals love: where to eat, what to try, and where to go next in Nakatsugawa.

Meeting point: your hotel in the Ena or Nakatsugawa area, or JR Ena / Nakatsugawa Station. Details confirmed upon booking.
