Explore the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Discover the Templar Castle and Renaissance convent, and marvel at the Pegões Aqueduct.
Embark on a journey through the rich history of Portugal with a visit to the Convent of Christ in Tomar. This grand complex, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, offers a unique glimpse into seven centuries of Portuguese architecture and history. Begin your tour at the Templar Castle, founded in 1160, and explore its medieval fortifications and the iconic Charola, a rare round-shaped temple inspired by Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre.
As you move through the complex, you'll encounter the Renaissance Convent of the Order of Christ, with its stunning Manueline nave and the High Choir. Marvel at the intricate details of the Chapter Window, a symbol of Portugal's maritime expansion. Continue your exploration through the convent's five cloisters, each reflecting different architectural styles from Gothic to Mannerist.
