Tbilisi: Georgian Military Highway Day Trip

Discover the beauty of the Georgian Military Highway on a guided day trip. Visit the Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress, Pasanauri, Gudauri, and the Gergeti Trinity Church.
Begin your journey at the Zhinvali Reservoir, renowned for its turquoise waters and panoramic views. On its shore stands the Ananuri Fortress, a well-preserved architectural complex with churches, towers, and defensive walls that reflect Georgia’s medieval history.

Next, head to Pasanauri, considered the birthplace of khinkali. See the impressive confluence of the White and Black Aragvi rivers, where the two rivers flow side by side for a long distance without mixing. The area is surrounded by beautiful riverscapes, cliffs, and a canyon.

Continue along the Georgian Military Highway, considered one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the region. Pass through gorges and winding serpentines, revealing breathtaking mountain panoramas. Above the village rises Mount Lomisi, at the foot of which stands the Lomisi Church of Saint George, an important religious and historical site.

Next, visit the Gudauri ski resort, located at an altitude of 2,196 meters, 120 kilometers from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Highway, near the Cross Pass. The road leads through mountain gorges and climbs in serpentines, offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks.

Stop at the Friendship Monument, located at an altitude of 2,384 meters. The monument, about 10 meters high, is built as a semicircular decorative arcade with balconies hanging over a deep gorge and is one of the most famous viewpoints in the area.

Continue to the Truso travertines, a unique natural landmark, known for mineral springs, colorful travertine formations, and extraordinary landscapes.

Finally, visit the Gergeti Trinity Church, the symbol of the region, set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. Towering above the valley is Mount Kazbek, one of the most famous peaks of the Caucasus, with an elevation of 5,033.8 meters.
