Meet your guide and head to the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace. Learn about the Giyanti Agreement, which led to the establishment of the city of Yogyakarta. The agreement contained the division of the territory of the Mataram Sultanate, where the eastern part of Mataram still belonged to Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat, which at that time was led by Susuhunan Pakubuwana III, and the western part belonged to Prince Mangkubumi.
The area is bordered by the Opak River. Prince Mangkubumi was also recognized as King in the region with the title Ngarsa Dalem Sampeyan Dalem Ingkang Sinuwun Kanjeng Sultan Hamengku Buwana Senopati Ing Ngalaga Abdul Rahman Sayidin Panatagama Khalifatullah. Prince Mangkubumi, whose title is Sultan Hamengkubuwana I, immediately decided that the Mataram area under his control would be named "Nagari Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat", a month after the signing of the Giyanti Agreement.
Prince Mangkubumi chose the Banyan Forest (Pabringan) area, where in this area there is a village called Pacethokan and Pesanggrahan Gerjiwati (Garjitawati) which was created by Susuhunan Pakubuwana II. Prince Mangkubumi also changed the name of the area to Ayodya. After the name change, Prince Mangkubumi immediately ordered the people to clear the forest so that a palace could be built.
The prospective new palace is located in an area between Kali Winongo and Kali Code. This location is considered strategic from a land and security perspective. Before the construction of the palace was completed, the temporary government was centralized in the Gamping area, specifically at Pesanggrahan Ambarketawang.
On October 7, 1756, the palace building was completed, which was also the date when the center of government was moved from Gamping to the new palace, which would later be called the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace. The event of moving the center of government of the Yogyakarta Sultanate is commemorated as the birthday of the City of Yogyakarta, to this day.
