Learn about tea ceremony history, its usage, see a ceremony being done, enjoy matcha with a Japanese sweet and then make your own bowl of matcha. With an English/Dutch and/or Spanish speaker present!
Known in Japanese as sadō (茶道) or chanoyu (茶の湯), tea ceremony is not just about drinking tea. In Japan, it is seen as a way of life and people dedicate their life to learning the art of performing tea ceremonies.
In this tea ceremony experience, you will be introduced to tea ceremony, about the history, the tea ceremony room and you will learn about what you are actually watching. The ceremony will be performed by a Japanese tea ceremony teacher with 50 years of experience. A native English speaker will be there to translate the Japanese. A native Spanish speaker is also available upon request.
The house is about a 100 years old and has a view of a small Japanese garden. The house used to belong to a family who sold kimono fabrics, but came into possession of the temple across the road. The tea ceremony room was part of the original house, since the owners enjoyed tea ceremony themselves.
The house is located 5 minutes from Hankyu-Omiya/Shijo Omiya bus stop, so it is very conveniently located!
In the room, seasonal flowers and a hanging scroll with seasonal sayings can be enjoyed. The utensils used and the sweets served change depending on the season.
This experience will be done in a group of max 6 people, so everyone will be able to properly see the ceremony being done and you will be able to ask questions in this more private setting. After witnessing the ceremony being done, you will be able to whisk your own bowl of matcha.
You are free to take pictures and videos!
By keeping the group small and the atmosphere casual, you can enjoy your bowl of tea and it will taste even better.
*During the tea ceremony, it is usual to sit in "seiza". In the seiza position, you are kneeling on the floor, holding one's legs underneath one's thighs, while resting the buttocks on the heels. This position can be tiring after long periods of time or not possible for those with knee problems. Chairs are available, so don't hesitate to ask for a chair.
*Matcha contains a high amount of caffeine! If you cannot have caffeine, you will not be able to consume the matcha tea.
*Make sure to wear socks or bring a pair of socks with you, being barefoot is not allowed in the tea ceremony room.
*Most of the sweets served will contain anko (sweet red bean paste). They are made to order and no other sweets will be available.
