Depart from Nagoya and head into the heart of Japan’s hidden mountain heritage. Leave the skyscrapers behind and discover tranquil rivers, thatched-roof houses, and cobblestone streets steeped in history.
Begin your journey in Hida-Takayama, known as the “Little Kyoto of Hida.” Stroll down the preserved streets of the old town, where you’ll find traditional wooden merchant houses, craft shops, and the gentle sound of water running alongside the roads.
Wander through the famous Sanmachi Old Town District and try local specialties like Hida beef sushi, Takayama ramen, and sweet rice dumplings. Browse exquisite traditional handicrafts made by Hida artisans, such as woodwork, lacquerware, and handmade lanterns.
Next, head to Shirakawa-go Gassho Village. Nestled in the mountains of Gifu, Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its Gassho-zukuri (steep thatched-roof) farmhouses, designed to withstand heavy snow.
Visit the Shiroyama Viewpoint for a panoramic view of the entire village framed by distant snowy peaks. Explore traditional houses and local museums to learn about rural life and architecture.
