MONTE ALBÁN For a thousand years, the Zapotecs controlled the central region of Oaxaca from Monte Albán until it was abandoned after urban expansion in 800 AD. The construction of Monte Albán began 500 years before Christ on a mountain.

The true reason for the construction of such a majestic ceremonial center on a mountain is a mystery. It took at least 200 years to complete the first construction. In fact, all the buildings have at least 5 to 6 overlapping phases.

It is unknown why the Zapotec writing was also abandoned along with hundreds of structures such as the ball court, hundreds of stelae carved with glyphs, ceramic objects, human and animal bones, starting in 750 AD.

The best part of the tour is visiting the residences, seeing their tombs, exploring the plazas, and climbing dozens of structures. You will see the immense landscape of the three Central Valleys of Oaxaca from the highest foundations. The most important markets in the city of Oaxaca are located in the Historic Center. The buildings in this city are Spanish. But the markets were built during Mexico's independence. The two markets we will visit are located in what was the old plaza of San Juan de Dios, opposite what was once the house of the conquistador Hernán Cortés. We will take a tour inside these markets, which were built in 1894. One of them has handicrafts, souvenirs, and food products. Edgar will take you to the stalls where he buys cheese, grasshoppers, moles, chocolate, and bread. You will taste local products.
