Begin your walking tour in Thamel, the lively tourist hub filled with shops, cafés, and narrow streets that reflect the city’s modern energy. From here, head toward Rani Pokhari, the historic Queen’s Pond built in the 17th century, symbolizing royal devotion and traditional architecture. Nearby, see Durbar High School, Nepal’s first modern school, which represents the introduction of formal education during the Rana period.
Next, enter Asan Bazaar, one of the oldest and busiest local markets in Kathmandu. This vibrant area is full of spice stalls, vegetable vendors, temples, and daily life, offering a true local experience. Hidden within the old city lanes is the Seto Machindranath Temple, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and closely linked to traditional festivals.
Continue onward to explore Ittum Bahal, a peaceful Buddhist monastery courtyard, followed by visits to Naradevi Temple, dedicated to the powerful goddess Swetakaali, and Taa Bahal, known for its beautiful Newari architecture. This popular coffee shop is a familiar landmark for both locals and travelers, making it an ideal and convenient place to meet before the tour begins. Himalayan Java has clear English signage, a modern storefront, and is usually lively, especially in the morning.
Please arrive 10–15 minutes before the scheduled start time and wait outside the main entrance. Your guide will be easy to recognize, wearing a company-branded badge or T-shirt and holding a sign with the tour name or your booking platform logo. If you are unsure, feel free to ask the café staff or nearby shopkeepers, as most people in the area know Himalayan Java Coffee.
