Embark on a 6-day, 5-night expedition from Cusco into the heart of the Manu Reserved Zone, one of Peru’s most biodiverse rainforest destinations. Your adventure begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco at around 5:45 AM.
Day 1 takes you through the Andes toward the Chullpas de Ninamarca and the traditional town of Paucartambo. Continue through Abra Acjanaco into the mysterious Cloud Forest, where you can observe orchids, ferns and a variety of birds. You will also have the opportunity to see the spectacular cock-of-the-rock display before arriving at Bambu Lodge in Pilcopata.
On Day 2, travel toward Atalaya and visit the Hummingbird Garden before continuing by boat along the Alto Madre de Dios River. Relax in natural hot springs surrounded by rainforest and then continue toward Boca Manu, where you will spend the night.
Day 3 takes you deeper into the Manu Reserved Zone. Visit a parrot clay lick and navigate the Manu River, keeping watch for caimans, turtles, monkeys, capybaras, birds and, with luck, jaguars. After reaching Casa Matsiguenka, explore the rainforest trails and visit Cocha Otorongo, where giant river otters may be spotted. An optional night walk offers the chance to discover nocturnal wildlife.
On Day 4, explore Cocha Salvador by boat and look for giant otters, caimans, monkeys and numerous bird species. Visit a macaw clay lick and observe colorful macaws and parrots gathering to feed. Later, walk through the primary rainforest with your naturalist guide and learn about the plants and animals of this remarkable ecosystem. A night walk may reveal nocturnal creatures.
Day 5 begins with an early nature walk or lake visit before continuing by boat toward the tapir clay lick. Enter a camouflage shelter deep in the jungle and spend the night in the area, with the opportunity to observe tapirs in their natural habitat.
On Day 6, begin your return journey from the Amazon rainforest toward Cusco. Enjoy the changing landscapes as you travel back from the jungle to the Andes. The expedition ends in Cusco between approximately 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
Throughout the expedition, your experienced naturalist guides will adapt activities according to wildlife conditions and recent sightings to maximize your opportunities for observation. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but every day offers a unique opportunity to experience the extraordinary biodiversity of Manu.
