During this one-day tour of Lake Titicaca, we will visit two islands: Uros and Taquile.
Both islands have distinct characteristics, and the inhabitants here maintain their traditions and customs. The island of Uros, also known as the floating islands, is built entirely of totora reeds. The inhabitants lead a quiet life on this island. It is located near the city of Puno, and many islanders make a daily trip to Puno to work or shop.
In contrast, Taquile is quite remote. The island has been designated as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO. Taquileños are known for their weaving skills. Men, from the age of 8 years old, are mainly responsible for spinning and weaving. Through these textiles, the people of Taquile communicate their marital status based on colors, size and manner of use. Single men wear red and white chullos, while married men wear red chullos. Single women wear a chullo adorned with pompoms, larger and more colorful than that of married women.
In this tour of Uros and Taquile we start picking up our visitors from their hotels. We will depart in a comfortable boat to the floating island of Uros, where we will visit 2 islands and then continue the tour to the natural island of Taquile (2 ½ hours of navigation) arriving approximately at noon.
We will make a short walk to the top of the island (30 minutes), from where we can appreciate the immensity of the lake and all its splendor; then we will have lunch and learn more about their textile trade, inhabitants and customs. We must mention that they were declared by UNESCO as "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity". The spinning and weaving are done mainly by men, who begin to perform this art from the age of 8 years old. The inhabitants of Taquile show their marital status through their textile garments depending on colors, size and mode of use. In males, single men wear red and white chullo, while married men wear red chullos. Likewise, single women wear a chullo with a larger and more colored pompom than married women. The excursion will be ending at approximately 17:00 hours.
