São Miguel: Botanical Gardens and Cave Tour

Explore São Miguel Island’s botanical gardens and a volcanic cave on a guided tour. Visit the António Borges and José do Canto gardens and explore the Gruta do Carvão lava tunnel.
Explore nature above and below on São Miguel Island. Visit two of Ponta Delgada’s main botanical gardens, António Borges and José do Canto, where you’ll find impressive centennial trees, peaceful walking paths, and tranquil lakes that invite you to slow down and enjoy nature at its finest. Admire a rich diversity of exotic and endemic plant species in beautifully maintained settings. Observe fantastic botanical collections, from palm trees to tree ferns, dragon trees, and Australian banyans. Next, descend into a fascinating lava tunnel that reveals the island’s volcanic origins. Explore Gruta do Carvão, the only volcanic cave on São Miguel open to the public. Classified as a Regional Natural Monument, this fascinating lava tunnel offers a unique glimpse into the island’s volcanic origins, with its striking rock formations and geological textures.

Please note: The visit to Gruta do Carvão is subject to availability. If no time slots are available on the day of your booking, the afternoon itinerary will be adjusted to include visits to António Borges and José do Canto Garden, the Pineapple Plantations, and the Farmers Market, ensuring an equally enriching experience.
