In summer the Arieiro car park fills before sunrise, but that's no longer your problem.

We drop you fresh at the very start of PR1. From here it's just you and one of Europe's great ridge walks — staircases carved into the rock, tunnels through the mountainside, and the crossing between Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m) and Pico Ruivo (1,862 m), the island's two highest peaks. You hike it one-way, the only direction now permitted. From the summit of Pico Ruivo, the trail leads you down to Achada do Teixeira — back to your own car.
